Artist Statement:
During the summer of 2007 I had the privilege to work along side Barry Tinsley on the restoration of the Sunsinger sculpture in Monticello, Illinois. The Sunsinger was a cast bronze sculpture mounted on top of 15 foot limestone base. The bronze had oxidized to an uneven blackish-brown color which had then leached into the face of the limestone base. The job entailed cleaning the bronze down to its base color then reapplying patinas to achieve a deep rich greenish color. The limestone base was cleaned with multiple coats of baking soda and lemon juice to leach the blackish color out of the stone. Many different commercial products were used but none seemed to work on all the different stains. When the base was as clean as we could get, all mortar joints were ground out and re-pointed along with filling large divots. When the mortar had cured a sealer was applied. The bronze was waxed and hoisted back on top of its base. With proper care and periodical cleaning, it should last another 100 years.
